Are You Looking for Alzheimer's and Dementia Care in Wyoming, Illinois, or across the United States?

Alzheimer's disease and dementia are challenging realities that affect not just the individuals diagnosed but also their families. The journey through dementia and Alzheimer’s can be both physically and emotionally complex, presenting a range of challenges that require a nuanced and compassionate approach. In Cheyenne, Wyoming, I have had the privilege of developing the first comprehensive dementia care program in Wyoming at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center (CRMC). This program represented more than just an intervention; it embodied a mission to deliver compassionate, knowledgeable support to families and individuals facing this often-daunting journey.

During my time working in palliative and hospice care, I supported patients and families navigating the various terminal trajectories that loved ones face at the end of life. I knew that dementia profoundly affects not only the patient and their close caregivers but the entire family, creating a deeply emotional and psychological journey that significantly impacts relationships and family dynamics. The Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care program I developed at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center was inspired by the understanding that navigating dementia is not just a medical challenge but also an emotional one. Drawing from the techniques established by UCLA and incorporating my unique approach to palliative care, the program prioritized compassion, collaboration, and a deep commitment to helping families understand what to expect and how to prepare for future challenges. My goal was to create a model of care that addresses the full spectrum of needs for both patients and their families as they traverse this often-unknown terrain.

During my tenure at CRMC, I had the honor of serving over 450 patients and their families, each with a unique journey characterized by varying degrees of behavioral challenges and emotional struggles. The complexities of dementia care include not just managing medical needs, but also fostering an environment that supports emotional and social well-being. I endeavored to create a nurturing space where individuals felt safe and heard, allowing for the open expression of feelings and concerns.

One of the most critical aspects of dementia care is managing the complicated psychiatric symptoms that often accompany the illness. Throughout my experience assisting numerous families, I encountered various forms of dementia at every stage, as well as patients exhibiting a wide range of psychiatric symptoms, from mild issues to crises. Over the years, I gained considerable confidence in managing complex and challenging symptoms.

Many healthcare professionals are hesitant to prescribe medications due to valid concerns about side effects and the stigma surrounding the use of psychiatric medications in elderly populations. Through my experience serving hundreds of patients with dementia, I have developed an approach that carefully evaluates the risks and benefits of different treatment options. By utilizing evidence-based strategies and tailoring interventions to meet the individual needs of each patient, I aim to alleviate symptoms such as anxiety, agitation, sundowning, and depression, all while enhancing the overall quality of life.

Dementia is inherently unpredictable, often leading to feelings of helplessness for caregivers. As caregivers navigate their responsibilities while dealing with the escalating needs and unpredictable behaviors of those with dementia, they may experience emotional strain, physical exhaustion, and mental fatigue. To address these pressures, I place a significant emphasis on empowering families. By providing them with effective tools and resources, I aim to alleviate some of the burdens associated with caregiving. This includes closely monitoring patient responses to treatments, facilitating open lines of communication among family members, and fostering a collaborative environment in which families feel informed and supported.

As I transitioned from CRMC to become the Medical Director of Cottonwood Creek and Aspen Creeks residences in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Troy and Sullivan, Illinois, my commitment to enhancing Alzheimer's and dementia care has only deepened. Now that I work independently, I have the opportunity to practice medicine exactly as it should be practiced—allowing families the time they need to truly understand the dementia journey and supporting them along the way. I am dedicated to ensuring that the high level of comprehensive support and expertise I provided when guiding families at CRMC is available within these incredible facilities.

In addition to serving residents of Cottonwood and Aspen Creeks residences in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Troy and Sullivan, Illinois, I also provide medical and dementia consulting services to families throughout the states of Wyoming and Illinois. I am also very excited to be able to provide family dementia consulting to families anywhere in the U.S. Although I cannot provide medical care to patients in states in which I am not licensed, dementia care is 80% non-medical care; assisting families in understanding and navigating the complexities of communication and support. Nearly everything I provide to patients and families in Wyoming and Illinois, I can provide to families elsewhere in the U.S.

If you are navigating the complexities of dementia, know that you are not alone. It is entirely normal to feel overwhelmed or unsure about how to provide the best support possible for your loved one. The emotional tidal wave that often accompanies the diagnosis can lead to questions, fears, and a sense of disorientation.

I am here to help by walking alongside you during this challenging journey. Whether you need guidance on understanding the changes occurring in your loved one, strategies for interacting with them on a daily basis, or emotional support as you face these trials, I am committed to assisting you every step of the way. Together, we can formulate a plan that promotes dignity and quality of life for everyone involved.

I can provide insights into navigating this system, empowering families to advocate for necessary interventions confidently, and providing care coordination and referrals. In Wyoming and Illinois, I can diagnose dementia, provide referrals to neurologists, manage symptoms related to dementia, and offer ongoing medical care. Throughout the rest of the United States, I can provide education and guidance about the dementia journey. Although I am not licensed to provide medical care outside of Wyoming and Illinois, I can assist you and your family in finding the right medical professionals for a formal diagnosis or medication management.

8. Coping with Caregiver Stress and Emotional Challenges: Caregiving can be an isolating and exhausting experience. It is important to acknowledge and address caregiver stress. I can offer support strategies to help you manage your well-being while providing care for your loved one.
