Empathetic Medical Care: A Reflection on Compassionate Support in Healthcare
As a medical practitioner, I reflect on the privilege of providing compassionate care to patients. I recently offered reassurance and support to a distressed patient, emphasizing the importance of being a source of comfort in addition to diagnosing and treating illnesses. I am concerned about the corporatization of the healthcare system and strive to offer genuine empathy and understanding in medical care.
Amy Shaw, PA
In my journey as a medical practitioner, I have come to realize that providing compassionate and collaborative care for patients and their families is not just a duty but a privilege. I have observed that when patients and their families find someone they can trust and rely on in the medical field, they come to see that person as the central figure in their healthcare journey – the hub of their medical wheel.
Just recently, a patient reached out to me in a state of distress after receiving concerning news from an urgent care visit, which led to an unexpected ER visit and an overnight stay. It was truly an honor for me to be the person they turned to for reassurance, perspective, and understanding during such a difficult time. I provided explanations for the medical tests, offered words of comfort, and encouraged the individual to get a good night's rest and try not to worry.
Reflecting on this experience, I am reminded of my purpose in medicine. It's not just about diagnosing and treating illnesses; it's about being a source of support, guidance, and comfort for those who need it most. I recently came across a thought-provoking Instagram video that discussed the corporatization of the food industry in the US and how essential nutrients are often stripped away, only to be sold back to us in the form of vitamins. The genuine care and compassion that should be at the heart of medical treatment are being overshadowed, causing people to turn to unreliable sources like "Doctor Google" for understanding and comfort.
As a practitioner, my primary mission has always been to address concerns, alleviate fears, and bridge misunderstandings. I strive to provide not just information but also insight, empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their health and find peace of mind in challenging situations.
As a Family Dementia Consultant and provider of Private Medical Care, I am committed to offering compassionate and understanding support to individuals and families. My goal is to inspire healthcare professionals to prioritize empathy and to assure patients that reliable and empathetic support is available.
